Naturopathic Medicine, Fertility & Acupuncture
WHAT TYPES OF FERTILITY ISSUES GET TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture can be used to treat any type of fertility disorder including elevated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained (idiopathic) infertility, poor egg quality, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and more. Acupuncture is also used for any male sperm pathologies that may be affecting fertility.
WHAT INFLUENCE DOES ACUPUNCTURE HAVE ON THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM?
Acupuncture has been reported to promote the circulation of blood in the pelvic cavity and improve ovarian function. Although the research is still ongoing, there is reason to believe that acupuncture treatment may be beneficial in promoting follicle production and enhancing uterine blood flow.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE HELP IMPROVE THE CHANCES OF GETTING PREGNANT?
Although we have mentioned several possible effects of acupuncture on the female reproductive system, one should not regard acupuncture as a cure for infertility. The main focus with Naturopathic treatment and acupuncture is to optimize a patient’s entire system and improving overall health. As a result, fertility may be greatly enhanced.
After a series of acupuncture treatments, many patients experience enhanced feelings of well-being such as more restful sleep, better digestion, decreased anxiety, increase of energy, etc. Many women also notice changes in their menstrual cycle such as decreased menstrual cramps, normalized blood flow, and a decrease in blood clots. These physical and emotional shifts can only positively influence the chance of conceiving regardless of whether one is trying naturally or undergoing medical reproductive treatment.
WHAT TIME OF THE MONTH IS IT BEST TO HAVE ACUPUNCTURE?
Compared to many of the fertility drugs which provide a powerful effect for a short duration, the immediate effect of acupuncture treatment is, in general, more subtle. The cumulative effect from regular acupuncture treatments, however, can produce significant long lasting benefits. Therefore, it is generally recommended that you receive acupuncture treatments on a regular basis, 1 to 2 times a week, throughout your cycle, especially during the first couple of months. Once fertility treatment has begun, different acupuncture treatments are administered depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle the woman is in. This helps to further potentiate the therapeutic effect of the fertility treatment.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS OF USING ACUPUNCTURE?
There are minimal risks in using acupuncture for fertility treatment. The risk of miscarriage may increase if incorrect acupuncture points are used during pregnancy. That is why it is extremely important to only receive acupuncture by a liscenced health care practitioner such as a Naturopathic Doctor or Acupuncturist who specializes in treating fertility. This will ensure that no acupuncture points are used that would potentiate any risk of miscarriage.
Acupuncture is generally safe regardless of a person’s medical history.
DIET and LIFESTYLE
Will there be changes to my diet?
When being treated by a Naturopathic Doctor, examining a patient’s diet is part of the program and is important in treating fertility. A healthy balanced diet is always important. You may be asked to fill out a Diet Diary in order to better understand what your diet looks like. Depending on what the diet looks like, many women who have difficulty conceiving are actually taking in foods and drinks that are slowing down the healthy functioning of the reproductive system.
Will I have to take supplements?
Naturopathic Doctors generally recommend a series of supplements depending on the needs of the individual. Commonly pre-natal multi vitamins including folic acid are recommended as soon as you are considering getting pregnant.
For patients who are having difficulty conceiving, however, different nutritional demands and a more specific supplementation program may be required.
